Fortunately, the water closet hadnât been occupied, and on the way back, Lucia heard her name. The stitchers were obviously trying to speak in hushed tones, but their voices reflected perfectly into the hallway.
âThe head managerâs getup sure is cute today. Iâm so jealous.â
âYeah, itâs great, but the design is kinda unique. Judging by the shape of the shoulders, itâs probably made to order. Do you think it might be Mr. Fortunatoâs work?â
âOh, totally. Mr. Fortunato is definitely backing her.â
âI heard that sheâs the illegitimate daughter of the guildmasterâs father.â
âNo way! Does that make her Mr. Fortunatoâs sister?â
Mere sensational gossip. Lucia could burn some time out here before going in and feigning that she hadnât heard a single thing, but noâthat would be admitting defeat. It wasnât as though she didnât understand how the stitchers felt. A young woman like her suddenly starting out near the top was bound to catch some attention. But as long as she was still in this role, and even if it was just on paper, she was their superior.
Lucia entered the room and stomped up to them, loudly announcing, âThank you for the kind compliments on my outfit!â A male stitcher spat out his red wine, making quite a mess; Lucia thought she had better lend him her stain remover later.
âUm, Head Manager Fano, you...â
âNo, we were just, erm...â
She had prepared for the worst, but these stitchers, who were slightly older than her, were kind of endearing in how they were floundering, and she hadnât been prepared for that. âOh, yes, I heard everything in the hallway.â
âSorry! I was just curious about the rumors Iâd heard, but I figured I shouldnât ask you either...â
âForgive me, I thought you were related to Mr. Fortunato, so I didnât know how I should treat you...â
They clearly apologized and laid out their reasonsâbetter than if they had tried to gloss over the issue or snapped at her in return.
âIf you can make heads and tails of itâand even fins and a pair of wingsâthen that isnât a rumor, thatâs some sort of flying fish!â said Lucia. The thread manager started coughing and choking. âMy clothes are my own design, not Mr. Fortoâs. Neither is he my brother; we are not related at all.â
The tension in the room was so thick, you could cut it with a knife. Even people at the tables were dead silent as they perked up their ears. Nobody looked shocked, so the rumors mustâve spread quite far already. Although work life and private life were two separate matters, a single misstep would jeopardize both the Forto family and the Fano Workshop, and any negative attention it brought to her work would be a huge problem. Besides, leaving things in the air would make the workplace so awkwardâLucia walked to Danteâs table, grabbed a new glass, then filled it half full of wine.
âHead Manager...Fano?â he said, punctuating his words with a moment of silence.
Before he could finish, though, she slammed the wine back. Frankly, it
